You’d most likely want to know why most US states seem to have a vendetta against sweepstakes casinos at this point. Well, the thing is some states think sweepstakes gaming is just a fancy term for actual online gambling. That said, other states have active traditional online casinos in operation and are of the opinion that sweepstakes casinos exploited a loophole to become a thing. 

The Money Is Getting Smaller

According to a KPMG report, the sweepstakes casino market was on course to hit a gross of $10.6 billion and a revenue of $3.4 billion in 2025. These numbers are staggering and show the potential that sweepstakes casinos in the United States. 

Many experts believe that the money linked to this market will continue to shrink as the years roll by. And if more states place bans on these casinos, the entire industry will die a natural death. 

What’s Next?

We wish that we could be the messengers of hope at this point. But the reality is that things don’t look too good for sweepstakes casinos in the future. This is because more states are tinkering with laws that could restrict similar sites.

In Florida, for instance, sweepstakes casinos exist. But they are under serious threat from the state’s legislature. That said, states such as Tennessee, Massachusetts, and Indiana are having talks themed around sweepstakes casino brands.

Besides states making plans to make sweepstakes casinos illegal, some game makers are removing their products from these sites. 

One notable mention is Pragmatic Play. Last year, the popular software provider withdrew from the US sweepstakes gaming market. If other top developers follow suit, the sweepstakes casino market could be as good as dead.

In the meantime, sweepstakes casinos are doing all they can to remain relevant. Most operators don’t want to incur the wrath of states. 

As such, you’ll find top sweepstakes casinos like WOW Vegas, Chumba, and McLuck updating their T&Cs to reflect the fact that they don’t operate in some states anymore.

Can Sweepstakes Casinos Survive?

This could happen. But it won’t be easy. We think that sweepstakes casinos will continue to operate in those states that aren’t having conversations about banning them yet. Even if this is the case, the entire sweepstakes market will get smaller.

You’ve also got to note that the operators of these sites are thinking about ways to remain relevant in the face of bans. One major example is how some of these brands have come together to create a group known as the Social Gaming Leadership Alliance (SGLA). Sites that are a part of this body are now calling their games Social Plus, and are hoping that this tag would make US states look kindly on their operations. Will this body pull its weight in the long run to make sweepstakes casinos evolve into something that’s accepted? Well, only time will tell.
